Panther Cap

Buy panther cap of the highest quality: Amanita pantherina — the close relative of the fly agaric — is visually more elegant, chemically more potent and mycologically particularly interesting. Our panther cap products come from documented harvesting areas in Lithuanian mixed forests, are species-verified and carefully processed according to the DGfM standard.

Amanita pantherina: unique and potent

Visually, the panther cap differs from the fly agaric primarily in cap colour: instead of a glowing red, Amanita pantherina shows a warm-brown to ochre-brown cap, covered with white veil remnants. The characteristic "mountaineer's sock" at the bulb base — a sharply demarcated annular ridge — is the most important identifying feature and distinguishes it from similar but harmless species such as the blusher (A. rubescens) or the grey spotted amanita (A. spissa).

Chemically, the panther cap is particularly known for its on-average significantly higher concentration of the psychoactive isoxazole alkaloids muscimol and ibotenic acid. Studies (including Michelot & Melendez-Howell, 2003) show that Amanita pantherina contains on average two to three times higher concentrations than Amanita muscaria. From a toxicological perspective this is decisive — from a collector and research perspective it makes the panther cap particularly interesting for mycological comparative research.

Possible uses and special features

Our panther cap products are sold exclusively for collector, research and decorative purposes. Use on or in the human body is expressly not recommended due to the increased active-compound concentration and correspondingly higher toxicity. These notes are not merely formal — they follow directly from the scientific data on Amanita pantherina syndrome (see, for example, the case documentation of the poison emergency centres in Mainz and Munich).

In this category you'll find both whole, sorted caps in various sizes (30 g, 50 g, 100 g) and finely milled powder. For reproducible dose applications we also offer our standardised Microdosing+ blend of 60% Amanita muscaria and 40% Amanita pantherina — the only form in which both species can be combined in a documented ratio. A detailed comparison of the two species is available on the blog: Amanita muscaria vs. Amanita pantherina.

Quality and species identification

Since Amanita pantherina can be confused with harmless edible mushrooms from the same genus, species determination at our facility is multi-stage: first macroscopic assessment in the harvest field, then spore-microscopic examination in the laboratory, and additionally in every batch a DNA barcoding analysis for unambiguous identification. This triple verification is by no means standard in hobbyist mushroom trade — with us it is mandatory.

All batches are additionally microbiologically tested and traceable by a unique batch number. On each product page you'll find the exact batch, harvest year, drying method and residual moisture documented.

Storage, shelf life and legal status

Vacuum-sealed, cool and dark, our panther cap products keep for at least 24 months. Sale for collector and research purposes is legal in Germany — Amanita pantherina, like Amanita muscaria, is not listed under the German Narcotics Act (BtMG).
